When does Medicare coverage begin?

Your coverage start date depends on when you enroll and which enrollment period applies to you. During your Initial Enrollment Period, coverage may begin the month you turn 65 or the following month, depending on when you apply. Special rules may apply if your birthday is on the first day of the month or if you enroll through a Special Enrollment Period.
